Have you ever wanted to have a cookery lesson from a Michelin-starred chef, who also happens to appear on the telly as well as podcasting and a zillion other mad skills?
Well, now you can.
Paul Foster, he of Salt in Stratford-upon-Avon, which if you haven’t heard of you should have, has refused to be beaten by the horrific year that is 2020 and has launched a new arm to his wonderfully successful restaurant – an online, subscription-based cookery school.
Salt Masterclass offers classes on everything from knife skills to showstoppers. You sign up and pay a monthly fee then have access to a whole load of classes from basic skills to pasta, bread, desserts, stocks and sauces, fish and shellfish and seasonal dishes. No need to leave the house, just get signed up and get your cook on.
The idea riffs on Paul’s Salt Cookery School, which sits above the restaurant in Stratford along with a chef’s table. The restaurant itself was awarded Stratford’s first ever Michelin star just 18 months after opening and also has 3 AA Rosettes and has fast become a mainstay of great food in the area.
Its cookery school only opened this year promising great courses as well as guest chef events and while 2020 has made things difficult, these guys haven’t let it stop them and have found another way to teach the likes of you and me some new skills despite lockdowns and everything COVID has brought to us.
On top of that, Salt has also launched an ‘at home’ menu, allowing you to enjoy their food even if you can’t get into the restaurant to have it there. They’re also doing their own egg custard choux buns which broke my resolve not to order too many sweet treats within about 2.4 seconds of seeing pictures of them.
